Today we are running 800m intervals with a 1:1 work to rest ratio to build endurance.  A very important aspect of running is breathing efficiency.  If you google "running and breathing", you will find a gazillion articles on breathing techniques, cadences, rhythm, and on and on and on.  If you are a research junkie, then by all means, google away.  If not, then just reading this little tidbit of info will help.

Here it is:  Breathe in the nose and out the mouth when running longer distances.  Woah!  Quite the concept.  But in all seriousness, focusing on that breathing style will help with all the afformentioned things above.  Why do it?  Well, your nose is equipped with all these tiny little hairs that catch and prevent pollen, dust, dirt, etc from entering into the lungs.  Catching those little nastys helps get clean air passing through narrow pathways first, through the trachea, and into the lungs where clean oxygen belongs.  If you breathe through your mouth, all those little nastys go directly into the trachea and right into the lungs, making it less comfortable to breathe.

So today, focus on this breathing technique when running.  Breathe the free air more efficiently and in turn, become a more efficient runner.
