Recently I was asked to do a “tip” on training when ill or stressed. I have commented recently on FB about this topic as well. Training
is a stress that breaks the body down. Being stressed and/or sick is generally not a recommended state in which to train as this will further break down the body compounding the issue. Now, there are two types of stress- acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term). Training to “release” acute stress can be a very healthy thing. However, under chronic stress, training is not recommended as you tend to break down your body even more, compromising health gains. Coincidentally, you can become ill from training through chronic stress. What a vicious cycle that is. UGH! When you are ill, your immune system is fighting all sorts of battles to get you better. So let your immune system get into its own training mode while you rest and recover. Everyone is different in terms of how quickly they recover from being sick. You must listen to your body and be smart about coming back. There is no set timeline for return. Be smart and come back when you feel you are ready to train again. When you come back initially, don’t go full throttle either. Ease back into it to build your strength and endurance back up again.
