Most of us sit…a lot. Sitting for prolonged periods of time can do some pretty nasty things to our posture and can lead to all sorts of issues with muscle tightening, shortening, and impingement. Coach Bryan pointed out last week that sitting too much and having tight anterior hips can lead to low back pain. Well, sitting too much also leads to having a tight thoracic spine which causes shoulder impingement. Guess what happens when your shoulder is impinged and you start taking it through range of motion it is not prepped for? It gets jacked up. How do you increase your thoracic spine? Grab a foam roller, place it underneath the shoulder blades, and perform supine back extensions with arms over your head. Perform 15 reps with deep breathes and focus on extending through the thoracic spine, not your lumber spine. There is no reason to get jacked up when you can prevent it.
